Touted as the biggest wholesale market in the East Java, we arrived at the market to find a building that could barely hold its own – Completely charred and swimming in a sea of debris and garbage, Pasar Turi, a once bustling market of merchant activity was scantly recognizable, save for the half-burnt signboard perched atop the derelict building. Merchants are now displaced though we managed to catch up with one of them, who still peddles a wide assortment of keropok (“Keropik” in East Java) of the wildest colors and sizes. Hard pressed into a tight corner by the catastrophe, these sellers have nowhere else to go. In the distance, the government is building up a 4 storey building at a stone throw away, but it’s to be sold to these merchants, who could barely afford anything after the electric fire.
